Bodacious Boudicca (Bo for short), July 2003-February 2015

Bo

Bodacious…a combination of bold and audacious.  Downright and unmitigatedly, perhaps even notoriously, thorough or complete.

Boudicca… Warrior queen of the Iceni, a people living in eastern England.  Boudicca’s husband was considered a Roman ally, but on his death the Romans took the land, enslaved the people, flogged Boudicca, and raped her daughters. In A.D. 60, rebels chose Boudicca to lead them, and they destroyed Colchester, with the Roman leader fleeing to Gaul. The rebels continued to Londinium which they burned, killing thousands of people. Leading a force of 230,000, Boudicca lead the rebels in continued fighting but was eventually defeated and died. A statue in her honor stands on the Thames near Westminster.

True in nature to her name and her breed, our Border Collie Bo grew up, working on our ranch. From the time she was several months old to the time she died, her work (not her job) was herd management of all living critters here. It didn’t matter whether they were Icelandic sheep that refused to flock, Highland cattle that used their horns to establish a pecking order, our Springer Spaniel with his selective hearing and responses, magpies that scolded her attempts to out-dig gophers, or hunters and UPS drivers who didn’t heed her unsuccessful guidance (aka herding).

Here’s to you, Bo. Maybe your days now be filled with sheep that flock, cattle that obey your directives, Springers that respond to your call, magpies that shut up, gophers that you can catch, and hunters and UPS drivers who know to bring treats and other proper tribute to lay at your feet. You deserve those green pastures.
